Cable Insulator Problem

I just purchased an exotic tonearm with wiring from the headshell to the RCAs. My problem is that due to the age of tonearm the wire insulation is cracking and sloughing off. At this time, I do not want to incur the expense, frustration, and time of rewiring the arm.

How can I deal with the loss of insulation in many areas and the cracking? I have been advised to use rubberized electrical tape which has very good RF rejection properties. Is there a better way?

Thanks for your help.
