You could always start cheap with a Shunyata Venom ($99)... I use two of them (pre and power) and they have made a very substantial improvement... Lowered the noise floor, more detail.

You could start with one and swap it around to different components to get an idea of where the biggest gains can be made.

This is what I did, and I eventually bought another Venom, as well as a VH Flavor 3 for my CD player, which provided a very nice improvement... Much more lively and dynamic than the stock cord, and better than the Venom in this application.

I will probably replace the Venom on my power amp at some point with an unshielded cord, but I have to say that the first Venom I got was an "ear-opener"!
