I've found an excellent remedy for what you describe as being unfavorable about the gold Wattgate AC connectors (as well as the gold Wattgate AC outlet) -- I find the gold Wattgate AC connector's unfavorable sonic signature aspects are very much improved when mated with the relatively new to the market silver Wattgate 381 Ag AC outlet -- the same remedy (in reverse) for the gold Wattgate 381 AC outlet is the silver Wattgate 330i Ag AC plug and silver Wattgate 350i Ag IEC connector combo.
My two VH Audio AirSine power cords (one placed on preamp; the other placed on power amp) are terminated with gold Wattgate 330i AC plugs and gold Wattgate 350i IEC connectors. When the AirSine's are plugged into silver Wattgate 381 Ag AC outlets the unfavorable sonic signature aspects are transformed, not unlike mating a gold Oyaide P-079 AC plug with a palladium Oyaide SWO-XXX AC outlet (The notion of not mating dissimilar metals seems to not be applicable towards AC gear, since many folks certainly enjoy the popular SWO-XXX/079 combo, and a Wattgate gold/silver combo also presents fine synergy to my ear).
As for the gold Wattgate 381 AC outlet remedy, my DIY VH Audio Flavor 3 power cord (placed on CDP implemented as digital transport) is terminated with a silver Wattgate 330i Ag AC plug and silver Wattgate 350i Ag IEC connector -- when plugged into a gold Wattgate 381 AC outlet, the same type of synergy occurs to my ear.
