This post will surely irritate hardcore cable naysayers, but I’m just going to report what I hear via different F-Video coaxial cables that connect my Comcast Digital subscription’s Motorola DCT2224 digital cable television terminal to my listening room’s CATV coaxial wall outlet. The Motorola DCT2224’s stereo audio outputs are connected to my main system, and is fitted out with as much attention to audio cables, power cords, power line conditioning, and vibration control as my digital front end is, since I take 2-channel HT (ala HBO, et al) very seriously.Long ago I noticed a marked difference in sound when various coaxial cables were placed beween the wall's CATV RF outlet and my Motorola DCT2224’s RF input. I found the the high quality RG-6 that Comcast provided to sound much better than various RG-59 cables I had on hand, with copper clad steel versions sounding pretty bad, to my ear.
This got me to thinking about even higher performance 75 Ohm coaxial cables. To make a long story short; I did my research, took a look around, then decided on a blow-out priced Acoustic Research PRO II Series F-Video cable listed on eBay since I didn’t want to risk buying a pricey high-end make/model product if my admittedly peculiar audio quest was unproductive. The mid-line PRO II Series looked to be safer bet than the upper-line Master Series since it’s integral ferrite noise blocker, silver plated center conductor, and tinned shielding worried my desire to have a “better sounding cable vs. a better looking cableâ€. My quest was not for a better picture - only a better sounding CATV audio presentation.
Anyway, the PRO II Series F-Video cable doing duty in my main system (and another for my bedroom system) was indeed a success and I find it’s performance to be superior to the RG-6 that Comcast provided: A lowered noise floor, smoother sounding from top-to-bottom; in-total a notably higher quailty audio signal (believe it or not).
Furthermore, the PRO II Series F-Video cable (in my main system) has since been replaced with the upper-line Master Series with even superior audio performance (my concern about it's ferrite noise blocker, silver plating, and tinned shielding was unfounded). The Master Series provides an even more lowered noise floor, less tonal bloom, tighter bass, more open and airy top end, less forward, better inner detail, and better dynamics (BTW, Teflon dielectric vs. the PRO II's PE). My favorite Music Choice digital music channels sound even more like the ubiquitous "CD Quality Sound" as a result. If only considered a cheap tweak, it’s a goody, IMHO. So...
