I recently bought a spool of AR "PRO II" series 12g (PR221) and 16g (pr262) speaker wire.
I was not expecting much but I needed some cable I could use and not have to worry so much about wasting (I like to move things around a lot).
So I went to Best Buy and saw the Monster Cable for $80 and $120 for their two best, but then I saw two other spools of AR cable for $35 each for 1 50ft 12g and a 100ft 16g. The cable appears to be good oxygen free copper that is braided around a PVC core... These cables have a good weight and feel to them, they are MUCH larger than the printed gauge, the 12g wire looks larger than a 10g.
After I got my bananna plugs attached and everything connected, I have to say, I am liking this wire. I have been using various more expensive cables that I had cut in certain lenghts so I was limited as to where I could place things. This AR cable is better than the multi $ a foot boutique cables I had been using, both the 16g and the 12g sound great. I have so much cable that I can biwire my towers with 16g and use the 12g on my single-terminal bookshelves and I got a ton left over for more experiments.
I highly recommend this budget wire. For the price, it is worth just having around when you need some extra cable too.
One thing, the cable gauge seems to be based on the copper content and not the wire diameter. With the PVC cores, the 12g looks more like a <10g wire, and the 16g looks more like a standard 10g. The 12g PR221 wire was hard to strip because my stipper only goes up to gauge 10, yet it wasn't enough. The 10g stripper notch worked on the 16g wire. Like I said, this wire is beefy.
