I use Cardas Golden Cross speaker cables and interconnects, but prefer the added jump that Nirvana interconnects add between the CD player and preamp. If I didn't have Thiel speakers and a Wadia CD player, I'm sure that I would have chosen differently. The same goes for my choices in tubes and power cables. In my system, Electraglide Ultrakahns do wonders for most of my components. The preamp was affected the least by power cord choice, and here I found the added jolt from an Elrod helped things.
Cable choice, in my experience, can make or break a system. I spent four years swapping out different cables and power cords, and I think that I'm finished now (famous last words). After I settled on a general direction that I was looking for, I spent a few years refining my choices and trying out alternatives.
Maybe some of my experiences with cables will be relevant:
Cardas Cross: laid back, but with some uncontolled, bloated bass
Cardas Golden Cross: less laid back than Cross, well controlled bass
Jena Labs: dead as a door nail
Synergistic Research: astringent and nasty
Nirvana: more energy than Cardas, but still somewhat euphonic
