Thanks for the detailed response Bambi B. I appreciate the time and effort in sharing your explorations on cables/power cords and equipment.
I have a Levinson 390S CD player that I intend to keep. I like it tremendously, and though I love the CD7, I think the Levinson may be a great match with the ARC REF gear (it's super detailed and could be called a tad too detailed at times). The speakers are also in place, Verity Audio Parsifals. I've heard Vandersteens before and think they are wonderful. I fell in love with the Veritys some years ago and, after running with an integrated solid state amp (Levinson 383) for 5 yrs, I almost feel that the new gear will bring the speaker to life! So it's almost like getting a new pair of speakers (I"ll polish them up nicely fo effect ;) ). I have Siltech cables (forgot which ones, 5yrs old) from CD to preamp. I've used Acoustic Zen's for speaker cables. Despite perhaps being care free in considering such a pricey setup, I still choke on $2000/meter interconnects - it's madening, though I appreciate that different cables sound different. The sales people say, "well for a reference system, you must have reference cables!"
I'm not much of a used gear guy - I'm not prepared to deal with any hassles, despite knowing how incredibly different the economics are. I'm auditioning VTL gear this weekend (ST150amp, 6.5 pre). They will have to be better than the ARC REF gear for me to want them (despite being cheaper in price). So it looks like ARC is the way to go - on the assumption I can get a reasonable package worked out. At the end of the day, I'm not really an equipment guy or a tweaker. I'll bear the tweakiness required for a REF110, but all I really want to do is stop playing with my gear and spend more time enjoying music.
I'll get the dealer to send me three or four cables, from the Audioquest copper (as you suggest) to the Shunyatta, to Siltech (if they have it) to try out before making the commitment. Ultimately, I want the cable to not change the way the REF equipment sounds. I don't want it to enhance anything, or filter anything, or dilute anything. I suppose only my ears will tell me and I'll report back after the equipment is fully finalized and hapily sitting in my living room.
All the best
