was specifically written to use an existing 110 ohm analog audio cable for balanced digital data. They happen to be laying around every studio in the world and the engineers didn't want to have to use a different/special cable for digital audio.So in a word it is FIRST a mic/balanced analog audio cable and secondly a digital cable. There is nothing really special about them. 110 ohm just happens to be the impedance of most shielded twinax cables and XLR connectors.
