XLR or RCA between Proceed CDD and DAP - no difference?...

System readily shows (to my ears) differences between different ICs, power cords, speaker cable. BUT - nothing that I can hear comparing XLR and RCA versions of the same interconnect between these two components. Tried with two different brands, of reasonable quality - PS Audio Transcendent and Wireworld Silver Eclipse.
Is there valid technical reason for this, something related to Proceed design? If you read user's manual, of course it says balanced is preferred method of connecting.
