Home Cable Asylum

Interconnects, speaker wire, power cords. Ask the Cable Guys.

Not the battery, just the snap connector that fits it.

Since there is no current through or voltage present on the shield, the cheap 9-volt battery connectors available at Radio Shack work fine as two-terminal connectors to experiment with the shield-to-ground connection. Simply wire one at each end of the cable with one wire to the shield and the other to the safety earth or chassis. Make up a short by connecting the two wires of another snap together, and use this to make the shield to ground connection at one end or the other of the cord.

It is good to turn off the equipment before interrupting the ground (for anyone in the USA that wants to try this).
