What's in the MIT "boxes"??

I found a set of MIT Terminator 4 speaker cables in the garage. I believe they are from ~2000. What is in the big box near the speaker-side end of the cable?? Has anyone disassembled a set to find out. Are these worth throwing into my second system in the bedroom?
