Hello Dianathehunter!I have had the Stealth Varidig Sextet (3 of them) for 3 months, and they are burned in (ie: their sound stopped changing). All cables are AES/EBU terminated, connecting a Levinson 37 transport to a dCS Purcell and two more of the digital ICs to a dCS Elgar Plus.
Overall, I preferred the music reproduction through the Pure Note Paragon digital ICs. There were, however, some things that the Varidig Sextet trio did better such as reproduction of hall ambience from a recording done in a natural acoustic. This is often felt to be superior detail retrieval, but can also be due to a more extended top end reproduction. This was a preferred effect on choral recordings, giving them a more natural presence (ie: a little more diffuse and a somewhat recessed sound stage) and a broadening of the sounstage width and height. But I found that on many other types of recordings (small ensembles, electronic music, jazz, orchestra), some instruments would be subdued relative to the other instruments and often to the point that I would have to strain to follow them. Which is more natural? I guess that depends on the venue. I certainly find that one can follow individual instrument groups in a live orchestral performance as well as being able to follow solo instruments. That was at times difficult with the Sextet.
Overall, the Sextet sounded thinner, but airier than the Pure Note Paragon. The Sextet could, at times, be a little bright. The Paragon, seemed to reproduce more harmonic richness, particularly in the lower harmonics of an instrument. There was more "chest" detail to voices (both in male and female), richer peresentation of solo cello, piano reproduction was exemplary. I found that the Sextet was a little fatiguing after a couple of hours. Not so with the Paragon. But, the Paragon seems to truncate ambience decay a bit. So as is usual, there are always trade-offs. For me, in my system, in my room, the trade-offs were fewer with the Paragons...and at quite a savings.
Additionally, the Tara Labs The One digital ICs came in third. And, I compared these cables in an audio reviewer friend's TacT/Apogee system. We came to the same conclusions in both, yet quite different, systems (mine: digital frontend as above, Levinson 32 pre, Sierra Denalli, Krell KSA300S on woofers, VMPS RM/x).
Cheers!
