First the good news: built a CVH Flavor 3 design power cord for a coax amp and heard yet again how much better any component can sound with better power cords. (Have done very well with most of a variety of DIYed PCs for power strips and for iso trannies, but hadn't swapped out for a chintzy ungrounded captive cord before now.) Immediately got wider and deeper and better defined soundstage from my FM, which is no slouch. That's without burn in time, too.I built mine in a fit of needing to displace some nervous energy, like most of my DIY projects, and of course ran for whatever I could buy off the shelf that day in my locale. This is my downfall.
Used SJOW 14/2 Carol cable, tinned copper braid shielding, Hubbell 3 prong plug, heatshrink, wirenuts into the snipped off original captive cord (I don't solder, sadly). Easy to make in a half hour of work. Only hard thing was swallowing as I snipped off the captive cord! Cost me about $30 overall, with most of the cost being the shielding (only available at one tiny hobby store here) and the heatshrink.
So here's where I feel really dumb: Chris Ven Haus, the real deal and a fine fellow, sells his tweaked 12AWG teflon shielded cable for only $3.99/foot! Oh Chris, if I weren't so stupid, I could have done better and saved dollars just ordering the parts from you in the first place! Or from Ernie Meunier at A'gon, or elsewhere.
My downfall is trying to do these things wihtout the wait/bother of ordering online... More fool me. I'll know better next time, and there will be a next time, since I have 3 other captive cords I'm now emboldened to replace.
For those hesitating to snip off a captive crappy power cord, the advice I've read here that you have nothing to lose but bad sound is quite sound indeed.
