Follow Ups:
Just beautiful. Love those double-ganged brass knobs. But my first love is a Fisher X100B because that's what we had when I was a kid.
Plus a Weathers table with wood tonearm (simply beautiful, and great sound too.)Sometimes I wonder how much progress has been made, because I remember how sweet that old system sounded. Modern stuff is all edges, the older stuff is mostly surfaces. Modern tubes like C-Js (I own an MV-50) sound tizzy compared to the sixties stuff.
Hi,
Insightful description.I think it extends to front end as well.My Scott tuners are somehow more satisfying to listen to(warts and all)than about 60% of my CD's.
Incidentally,I recapped one of my 299b's,and replaced some resistors, and went to under chassis electrolytics(modern values). Also dropped the voltages with a 500ohm 10w resistor off the 5AR4 to bring down plate and grid.NOS EL84m,etc.This amp now sounds horrible.I'm going backwards to see where I screwed up.
Best,
Pat
That's amusing! Maybe old Herman Hosmer knew a thing or two. I'm reluctant to buy modded vintage stuff because I have no idea whether it truly improves the equipment, and in any case it's not what the designer had in mind. There are exceptions of course, but I'm not knowledgeable enough technically to know them. At least you're having fun. The Fisher amp we had used 6BQ5 push-pull or something like that -- I hate to confess I am electrically untutored -- and I was wondering if other amps using this configuration would also tend to be sweet sounding.
Hi,
Actually this is not a "modded"299b.A rebuild using modern parts(under chassis caps)new coupling caps, rebuilt power supply etc. After I posted,I found my problem.I installed 4 resistors of the waaay wrong value.Things are back to normal now.
BTW,this is a 7189 PP integrated. The 7189 is a 6bq5 with higher plate and grid voltage.Sounds virtually the same.Scott and Fisher sound different but this tube type is known for a sweet but punchy signature.Probably the sonics you remember fondly.I prefer a 6bq5/el84/7189 based amp to el34 and 7591 types for this reason.
Best,
Pat
