Thanks for the advice for a tape deck neophyte. I will crack it open and see what the belts look like - I'll admit I was not aware TDs had belts. Will submit a follow up if I get stuck.
Follow Ups:
Sometimes the belts become gummy and melt over time, dry cracked and broken, due to a reaction to atmospheric conditions, or to poor materials being used. It is not uncommon for some belts to be good as new, and others close by to be useless.Open it up, check it out. If you need to disassemble some of the deck, just remember where everthing goes, make notes/drawings if the terrain is complex, put the screws and other small parts in some sort of container so they don't slip away into a crack somewhere. It might be a good idea to get a service manual for the deck.
Hi, I opened up my kenwood cassette and the two belts appear to be pretty stretched/cracked. did a google search and found one place that sells them: http://www.vintage-electronics.net/ but he doesn't have them and said to mail them in to see if he has the equivalents. Does anyone know any other sources for belts? thanks.
You'll have to make some measurements to get the exact belt, as these are individually itemized rather than by tape deck make/model. There should be a list of belts available on the web site.
