Hi TnT, it has to be, because it is the only one that I have. I love that little amp, it sounds so good. I wish I could find some Mullard 6EU7 tubes for it. That is very interesting that some of the PAS 3's might be PAS 3X's. I will check it out. I thought about bypassing the tone controls. I also thought about upgrading the Power supply. Heck, I might as well admit it, I thought about completely upgrading it, but I just don't want to ruin the sound, you know, where it sounds like a squeeky clean analytical boring sound. Heck, the Tungsrams make it sound close enough to that sound as it is. I noticed when I went from JBL175 drivers to Altec 902 8T's that I had to be careful what I drove the 902's with as they can take your head off if not driven by the right equipment. I haven't found a solid state amp or preamp that has sounded all that great as the tube equipment has on these 902 drivers. It's funny how you have to match things up. I have other speakers that only sound good on solid state equipment. Go figure. Anyway, I am really glad I bought that Magnavox amp. I haven't done a thing to it except change tubes around (just the 6BQ5's, EL84's). Thanks alot. If I buy a ST-70 or Heath W5M's, I will move the PP Magnavox up to power the horns, and use the ST-70 or W5M's to power the bass lower midrange.
Follow Ups:
I have a Pas3 still in kit form, which I will be building soon after I finish reworking the ST-70's. This kit is original as I got it in 7th grade, and it has the two green caps. The tubes say "Dynaco ECG83/2AX7 made in west germany". The box is marked PAS3. I wonder if this is actually a 3X, although I am not really certain of the differences. I do know that everything in the box came from the factory that way.
Pat-All PAS3's and 3x's have the green caps, so this is not how you can tell the difference. The PAS3x's had special tone controls that were marked on the rear with Dynaco's part # with "x" after it. They also had a 1.0 uF cap from the bass tone controls to the PC-5 board which is not in the 3's and is shown on the schematic of the x's and not on the 3's. Another quick way to tell(if your unit has not had parts replaced)is that the x's had two cleanout ports on the tone controls while the 3's had only one.
I've had several of both and this is what I've found.
Hope this helps.
Regards,
"Kico"
My kit has yet to be assembled, and it does not have the special tone controls. The schematics show it to be a PAS3, as does the box. Maybe just a little wishfull thinking on my part :-)
