i currently have both the 3800 and the a1 which i am a/b'ing as part of my upcoming review of the denon dvd-3800 player.overall, the dvd-3800 player has inferior sonics to my "reference" which is a sony xa777es.

thanks Christine, eagerly awaiting your review of the 3800. Please post video part too.
hopefully will be posted on www.michaeldvd.com.au in a few weeks once it's gone through the editorial processin summary - video is excellent and for the most part identical in performance to the dvd-a1. if you are only interested in video, buy this player rather than the dvd-a1 and save your money!
the review unit has the chroma upsampling bug, though, which makes it annoying compared to my reference player - the panasonic rp82. the picture is also slightly softter than the rp82, but exhibits less ringing and more detail.
Did you apply the Chroma bug correction firmware? Video is one consideration but need to know about the audio too. I know the audio may not be equivalent to A1 but shouldn't be really bad.
the player has the october 2002 multi-region/pal progressive firmware applied, which also supposedly corrects the chroma bug. i don't really want to apply the dec 2002 firmware to it, because the player belongs to denon.well, it eliminates the chroma bug from toy story, but the chroma bug is still visible in lots of places, including for example the touchstone pictures studio logo. i think the firmware fix will never completely eliminate the chroma bug, but i could be wrong.
for more details, refer to my dvd-a1 review
Christine,For us here on the Audiobahn, we would be far more interested to know about the DVD-A playback quality, so please don't let the chroma issue distract you. Anyway, my 3800's images are fabulous. But I'm more interested in the DVD-Audio comparison with the DVD-A1 (or with other players for that matter!).
