USC’s Javorius Allen runs into a wall of Stanford defenders, including linebacker Noor Davis, in the teams’ Sept. 6 meeting.
There are a few nagging questions about Stanford’s offense, but none at this point about its defense. It has been the Cardinal Curtain.
Against USC, the defense played well enough to win in a game the offense pretty much gave away. In Stanford’s two wins — admittedly against the lesser competition of UC Davis and Army — the defense has been airtight.
Thanks mainly to those two shutouts, Stanford (2-1) is ranked No. 1 in the country in total defense, giving up 204.3 yards per game, and scoring defense (4.3 points per game). It is also tops in the nation in fewest passing yards allowed at 66.0 per game — 18 yards fewer than No. 2 Clemson.
