I've lived in CA all my life and I've never been fearful of the earthquakes. Fires are scary because I have family who live in several high fire danger spots.
Some years back the comic strip Non Sequitur had a very apt comic... two guys sitting on lawn chairs... one in CA, basking in the sun, reading a newspaper with the headline "Blizzards blast the eastern seaboard." The other man, wrapped in winter clothes and waist-deep in snow, reads his paper with the headline "Another quake rocks California."
Both have the same thought bubble... "Why would anyone want to live there?"
