Inmate Central, where civil and family-friendly discourse about off-audio topics (other than religion and politics) is welcome.

Obviously, you missed the history class where....

they explained that inventing the compass and gunpowder during WWII led to widespread Chinese dissatisfaction with audio reproduction. Being an inventive, industrious (and rather large) lot, their scientists invented the first atomic - powered turntable in 1943. (Design later stolen and marketed by LIRPA Labs). It proved to be rather unwieldy, so production was very limited. If the Chinese had realized the military applications of their turntable, we'd all be eating Dim Sum, and American Ducks would be really really few, and really really nervous. But I digress...

Their scientists next invented the Transistor, but they stopped production almost immediately, because it was just too damn hard to say "Transistor" while a war was raging. Next attempt: Gunpowder-filled Van de Graaf generators... the first true attempt at electrostatic sound. Needless to say, explosive dynamics... but reliability was a real issue.

The Chinese finally settled on tubes. It is unclear how they reached this epiphany, but recent papers released from the Mao archives refer repeatedly to an American collaborator named Bir Conlad, or something. Bu I digress again...

The Japanese grew very disheatened that their enemies got to hear really cool stuff like the Tijuana Brass or Motorhead, while they were stuck listening to Rush Limbaugh and Michael Savage on those crappy Sony AM radios on a keychain. In short order, the Japanese uninvaded China, and bought most of the golf courses in Southern California, to drown their sorrows at the 19th tee.

Thus endeth the lesson...
