RE: Are they a good buy, considering

If the cabinets are in nice shape, yes. The AR2 family and the AR5 used the same 10" woofer with a high Qts. The result is a bass system Q of 1.2, which is quite high, and a 50 Hz system resonance. The sound is fairly punchy in the bass, and good for jazz, folk, some rock and popular, and because of the smooth mids and highs, pretty good for classical and chamber music.

A lot of people, me included, like the bass in the AR2's better than the AR3a.
