Charles, everything one might call the "vintage tube sound" is nothing more than poor quality/out of tolerance parts.....compounded with worn out tubes, poor circuit design, crappy wiring practices, and same old line up of tube choices. There, I said it, burn me at the cross now!
Those of us that have been lucky enough to hear directly heated triodes aren't likely to have heard much more than 2a3/45/300b. There are a better tubes out there like RS241/UX-210/UX-245/VT-52/UX-171A/31/275A.
Really your question is too big. Break it down into parts. Such as "what is the best output device....i.e. tetrode/pentode/triode and then maybe indirectly/directly heated. You could do the same with BJT/JFET/MOSFET.
