Great source (ESP) of articles. A great tutorial on square wave testing. It was popular back in the 50's; but seems to have faded a good bit since. Ability to use square waves is just one of the reasons I prefer a function generator over the lower distortion of an oscillator.

The ringing you describe on the HF87 is very likely a transformer artifact as you suspect. I haven't looked up the schematic for that amp; but the HF20 has a small capacitor between one plate tap and the center tap to stop oscillations. It also has to be on the correct plate tap, which tells me there is an asymmetry in the X-frmr construction. (X-frmr; yet another shorthand for transformer)
