Those beautiful wooden side panels ...

... (and sometimes top sheets) on many vintage receivers, are they just for looks? Do they offer any sonic benefits? Of course, for the most part, modern receivers eschew wooden side panels, but in many cases I think they enhance the visual appeal of many vintage audio pieces. So, what are the parameters on replacing/refinishing the beautiful side panels on various receivers? Have you re-veneered particle board panels and what did you learn? Where the panels are particle board with veneer finishes, can the entire panel be replaced with solid wood? Would solid wood offer any sonic benefits?
