Likely a difference of the rest of the system and source material.Certainly. And perhaps priorities come into play. While I enjoyed the midrange and top of the SP-3a, it wasn't particularly quiet with MC cartridges.
I heard the preamps with a Threshold Stasis 2 driving Dayton-Wright XG-8s. Source material was usually classical vinyl. Table was a SME 3009/Linn-Sondek LP-12 with an Ortofon or Denon cartridge.
edit: The SPA replaced a JC-2 in that particular system which was the first SS preamp I heard that truly challenged the SP-3. I would agree that none of those preamps bettered the others in every way.
