if use inside most of the gain goes on picking up crud,when used outside the noise figure is too high anyway.
even adding an amp right at the mast head/antenna terminals, to a directional antenna is not always a good idea, because you add noise.
I carried the Tandy powered rabbit ears when travelling and gave up within a yr, it made things worse. Bulding a directional flat window antenna out of two v's of soft insulated wire, and some sticky tape, plus some thin pro type, flexy 75 ohm coax ($$!) for the lead. coiled up all this took up way less room, less batteries, less fragile, and worked. and it was ok for AM too.
