Home Radio Road

Which tuner to get and getting the most from it. Thank God, for the radio!

Agree, but live broadcasts can be even better.

When I am fit again, and able to carry a big - extendable to high-up - mike stand, I will go back to recording for Artsound FM, in simple stereo (ORTF).

And even share some of the results!

With time get a pair of 414s, and a tube based portable pre-amp and try Mid-Side (M-S) technique. ? One mike set to Left minus Right and a cardioid or omni for mono (left plus right). Mikes coincidental one above the other.

M-S, when used for location recordings, has a big advantage for post production or live OB, you can with the right box / sw move the array in and out - widen or narrow the image, and IF the box of tricks allows left to right.

So you can 'live with' a non-ideal array position. Not completely, mind.

IMO software for post-production and editing SHOULD be able to deal with M-S. Some can, but very few have good guidance. Most get bogged down in pop engineering issues.

One day I hope to be the mike positioner chap for a live OB.

Warmest
