Before you "toss" the tube, try the series SS diode tweak. Very frequently, the "fireworks" stop and the tube serves well. My bias is towards UF4007s, instead of 1N4007s. The idea being less switching noise, from the outset, can't be bad. However, regardless of which "sand" diode you use, the vacuum rectifier blocks switching noise from entering the B+ rail.
