Well, a 12V switcher is the simplest, cheapest way to obtain regulated DC. And the 12V-6V converter adds less than $1.00 to the cost. This method also eliminates some switching complexity. With both voltages available, a single SPDT switch can do the job. I'm not sure the series/parallel approach has much advantage in the long run.
