In my guitar amps I lift the center tap of the high voltage winding with a large and heatsinked 25K/50W resistor.
It brings B+ down from 300V to like 40v.
Lot of companies switch between the rectifiers and the first cap as you stated above. I am not a real fan of that. But then again I don't like SS rectifiers either.
