Yes, back tension is normal otherwise the pulled reel would be free wheeling and cause tape spillage. There has to be some type of damping/brakes. It is normal for replays to make a sound, a click. Continuous chattering is not normal. You shouldn't fast wind or rewind an old, fragile pre-recorded tape. Any magnetic tape is fragile. Computer tape drives used to be made with vacume chambers for tape loops to keep out dust and protect tape. Rewinding and fast forwarding causes tape damage and causes the tape stack is be scrambled and subject to damage. Only play it at play speed or refrain from fast winding to find the track you like best. Moe
