Equivalent Series Resistance.
The rectifier ripple current (a function of capacitance and load current) produces the ripple voltage across the caps total resistance.
This produces a power loss (V^2/R) which is turned to heat which can cook the caps.
So lower ESR, less ripple, less heat, longer life.
That's ESR 101.
