If you are looking to build one, I'll make a few suggestions:
There are much more interesting tubes than most of the 12a*7 family; 6sn7,76,6sl7,6c6,7af7,6c5,6l5,6j5,we396,37... are some examples. If ya gotta go with a 12a*7 type the 12ay7 is the best of the lot IMHO, it is the only one of the series that was designed for audio.
If your preamp has a lot of gain, then a low mu triode is best. If it has low gain then a higher mu tube is called for. Most of the time you don't need a lot of gain.
Use cap coupling between gain/driver tube and 45. This will enable you to easily select a LF rolloff that makes the use of a subwoofer easier.
Use LEDs in the cathode of the gain tube.
KISS. make it a 2 stage amp.
Leave lots of room to experiment.
