Hmmmmmmmmm

Hey have you tried putting some low ESR, lo L caps across the batteries? The ones aimed at switchers should be able to make a 9V square have a lower Zout than a gel-cell for the amount of charge that can flow even at HF for this sort of setup.

I've got caps laying around from doing some switchers a few years ago maybe I'll try them on the transistor radio batteries and see if it makes any difference. At this stage of the game logic is out the window since I don't have a clue what optimum would be.

I only use solid state so perhaps it's just too numb to the effect. TBD.
