I had the same problem with a ASUS K8V Deluxe motherboard / AMD Athlon 64 combo. In my set up ASUS offers a smart fan function in the BIO's that caused my nightmare. Every time the circuit switched on and off it caused pops and clicks during audio playback. Check your BIO settings. After I switched the function off my problem was solved :)Alan
