I had the same question. What I was told is that the 1/4" plugs provide better electrical contact vs an RCA connection. Also, in studios they are less likely to become loose.For the EMU, as I recall, it has another benefit (please check me on this): you can use a mono plug for an unbalanced connection to your amp, or a stereo connection for a balanced connection (with the appropriate cables and the ability of your amp to accept a balance connection of course.
