My setup is following:

* Raspberry PI2 (No PI3)
* iFi iPower 5V
* MamboBerry Lite - HAT DAC (just released)
* PiCorePlayer 3.0

This IMO beats a Touch already and will cost you around 150€/$.

I would not recommend to run the LMS server on the PI.

If you want a standalone machine you might have a look at Moode or Volumio or Archphile.

I would not run a 1st generation PI.

With a HAT DAC you get away from all the USB mess. S'been a relieve for me.

There's tons of info on the net how to tweak the PI a little.
