Yes, they work. For me, some seem to work better than others but the best for me is a freeby from a magazine HiFiChoice. Some expensives ones are only so so. Stereophile used to sell a disc as well.
I don't know of a good free source but the discs are not expensive if you look. A detuned FM signal is sometimes used for burn in.
