RE: You could ask someone who has one...

....but am surprised they did not use a large (16-32 GB) allocation of RAM for that purpose. I am sure they know what sounds best.

The Aurender W20 uses a 240GB SSD for music file caching.

Several possible reasons why they didn't use RAM:

RAM is volatile memory losing all of it's cached data (music files in this case) when the power is shut down. The amount of RAM supported on the smaller passively cooled Mini-ITX computer motherboards* is relatively small. The cost of SSD on a capacity basis is much less expensive than an equivalent amount of RAM. And SSDs do not lose their data (cached music files) when the power is shut off.

*I do know that Aurender uses Intel Atom based Mini-ITX motherboards running the Linux operating system and a separate audio board of their own design. One motherboard brand that they are known to use is made by ASRock. These smaller motherboards have few DIMM slots and don't support a huge amount of memory.
