I'm not exactly thrilled by seeing a round chunk of wood inserted into the center of a cone I am going to listen to.
But, I do think I understand this, shall we say, "coherency objective".
Start with a really, REALLY good mid range unit, get as much as you can from this mid range unit, but ONLY what it will give you. Trying to squeeze more from what she will give will surely result in rejection.
Add in your bass and highs. Have fun !
