We just make sure to have the amp on standby whenever we start up, and whenever we fool around in the signal chain we shut off the tweeter amps. Of course this means no clicks or pops are allowed at shut down. And I keep a bunch of spare ribbons on hand.

BTW we have measured G3, G2, G2si at various times. G3 is certainly a better driver for going deeper. Alon Wolfe put G3s in Paul Stubblebine's Magicos, which we crossed over at 2kHz, 4th order, but not without considerable fretting about resonance issues near the crossover point. The G2 and G2si measure surprisingly close to each other. I use G2si in my own Straight 8s (crossed at about 3500Hz). Have some G2s I'm saving to use with some PHLs. Between the two 2 models I don't think you're losing much going with the less expensive si version if you can live with a little less sensitivity.
