A closed-form filter has no bearing on whether or not the original samples are retained. 'Closed-form' means that the filter coefficients can be directly computed from a formula. The other approach is iterative - you use an algorithm to find the filter coefficients until the error is below some threshold. Both closed-form and iterative approaches are approximations to the ideal low pass filter, which is impossible to create in practice because the coefficient 'list' is infinitely long.

As an example, half-band digital filters can be specified using iterative techniques (such as Parks-McClellan) and by definition pass all the original samples. These filters can be chained together to perform interpolation by powers of two.
