I like Schiit though I'm not an owner.
I think you got two things confused. Schiit's upsampling and re-clocking is "closed form" which means you get interpolated samples AND the original samples, along with vastly improved clock timing.
This is a very advanced form of Asynchronous Sample Rate Conversion, and AFAIK is unique to them, though the principle is fairly old. Usually ASRC throws away the original data for the sake of timing. Schiit does not.
Schiit's closed form ASRC is a separate issue to whether the DAC itself is multi-bit or delta-sigma, as this closed form upsampling could be used in either event.
