I've just looked up slew rate calculations, posted by Gordon Rankin on SET asylum.
Calculations for the 5670 give the result that the driver stage should run at 1.5mA to give a fully satisfactory slew rate. This uses the suggested factor of safety of 5.
It seems that the standard driver stage, running at 0.5mA, may indeed be compromised as I believed. My 0.9mA is still on the low side but will achieve a moderate, though not ideal, factor of safety.
So the mod to increase the current in stage 1 is very highly recommended.
