And they're not easy to make. Here's an article from 2006, at a time when only (1) company in the world was producing them.
A person here says "it involves an analog process". But not too many engineers understood this idea, at the time. It does not appear to be analog, unless we count the output filter -1 part.
And that too could be different. It's now high-speed -as compared to the typical (slow) losing-its-shape analog waveform.
