They have two systems (one ultrahighend, one not) that remain pretty much constant, in the same rooms, and they have a panel of reviewers. And components are slotted and reviewed in one of the two systems based their price point or performance. Over the years you get to know each panelist tastes and preferences and the team overall, and the systems reference points. When you read a review you are pretty much guaranteed to get a the best sense of what a component does, how it sounds and how it compares to other components. The people who run this magazine know their stuff and do things the right way.
