The only thing Carver did was to add a low value resistor in series with the output of the solid state amp. A one ohm resistor brings the damping factor of his amp down to the level of a typical tube amp output impedance. I think long term listening would have disclosed differences that an a/b comparison sometimes obscures.
He did the same thing on one of the outputs of his Sunfire amp.
