It could also be a surge of DC to your speakers which some say is more potentially harmful to woofers and ribbons than dome tweeters. The implementation of muting circuit or speaker protection circuits resolved this with a relay which can be tied to caps, transistors, diodes, etc. when the pop sound is heard when the amp is turned on or tuned off and is usually due to a bad or sticking relay or a faulty component affecting the relay even though you hear it with no music playing. So yes, it could be a cap discharging due to a problem with any of the above. Check that all your cables and wires are seated correctly including surge protectors, etc. Too many pops though and your speakers could go "poof" so you might want to have the unit checked out.
