I wasn't that impressed with the Musical Surroundings Nova Phonomena with MC cartridges. It sounded a little dynamically compressed. It did OK with MM.I much prefer the non-battery operated PS Audio GCPH for both MM & MC. The only way I could 'live with' the sound of the Nova Phonomena with MC cartridges was to use a Step-Up-Transformer (Bob's Devices) with the Nova Phonmomena set to MM mode.
You really have to ask yourself if a battery powered phono preamp will outperform others just based on the fact that it operates off batteries. My answer is no.... but it's good marketing spin. ;-)
