Going back to the 1950s and 60s when hi-fi took off as a hobby, here are the terms generally used:
- power amp: generates power for the speakers, but has no input selector, volume or tone controls. Used with a separate preamp.
- preamp: has a selector to switch between various inputs such as phono, tuner, tape decks, etc. and has a volume control and perhaps balance and tone knobs, but the output is line level only; inadequate to power speakers by itself. Used with a separate power amp.
- integrated amp: combines the two pieces above into a single unit.
- receiver: an integrated amp with a tuner built-in.
